Owen Sound, Ontario (UW) - Eleven ultramarathon runners signed up and ran the annual Damn Tuff Ruff Bluff Run on Saturday in Owen Sound with the start/finish in Harrison Park. The 50K course consisted of four 7.75 mile loops on hilly, rocky, rooty trails up to Inglis Falls and along a stretch of the Bruce Trail over to the Creamery Hill and back to the park.
Giles Malet of Waterloo successfully defended his title from last year by coming from behind to pass earlier leader Tony Martin from Kitchener, winning in 4 hours 27 minutes and 30 seconds (4:27:30). Second place went to Ron Gehl from Kitchener in 4:38:16 with Scott Walsh, also from Kitchener, third in 4:45:05 June Donald of Waterloo, one of two women entered, won the women's title, finishing seventh overall in 5:27:12. She was the first woman finisher in the five-year history of the race.
Organizer Doug Barber of Owen Sound placed sixth overall in 5:23:26 and was pleased with the turnout of people from out of town, including six people from the Kitchener-Waterloo area alone. Everyone liked the course layout, despite the toughness, and a few missed turns on the first loop. With trail races with numerous turns it is quite common to take the wrong route! The weather man cooperated with cool and dry conditions
