Kingston, Ontario (UW) - Paramita Jarvis and Hladini Wilson brought this now classic event back to the 400 meter facility at Kingston's Holy Cross High School after a two year absense. In marked contrast to last year's event held at the Royal Military College during an incessant cold downpour, which turned the track into a soup of slick clay and cinders, you couldn't have asked for more perfect weather: overcast skies which prevented the asphalt from heating up and temperatures in the mid+ 20's tempered by a refreshing 20km breeze.
The outstanding performance of the day was produced by rising star Deanna Lindsay, who really gave the men a run for it and I believe actually led the field later in the race, and was only a little over a mile short of the Canadian Open Women's record set by Ashley Evans, a fact that I am sure will not be overlooked by the selection committee for the Canadian 100 km team being assembled for the World 100 km Challenge in Holland this fall.
While the fellowship and camraderie as usual were at their peak and the cuisine and trackside service were once again outstanding, still there was the occasional complaint about having to run around in circles without relief. However, no one would deny that it is really a good test to be able to persevere when you are never more than 300 meters from the showers and your car.
