After the
coldest winter in recent memory, Ontario ultrarunners and others got
to finally thaw out at the 1st Annual OUSer Spring Warm-up Run.
The run consisted of a 4 km loop in Waterloo. Runners could
choose between a 44, 20 or 12 km event, and some chose something
between these official distances. All proceeds will go directly
to OUS operating funds. This will help ensure a fiscally healthy
Series which will ultimately benefit the runners.
Clark
Zealand is a Lindsay, Ontario native who has recently settled in
Waterloo. After having established himself as a major
name in American ultrarunning scene while studying in
Lynchburg, Virginia, Clark ran a comfortable 2:54:09 to
finish first in the 44 k. Clark is expected to be seen at many
of this year's OUS events.
Monica
Scholz completed the 44 k in 4:21:06. Monica will be running the
Around the Bay 30 K next weekend before heading to Morocco for the
gruelling Marathon des Sables, a 150 mile stage race through
the desert.
Paul Braun and Ronda Cook were the first finishers
in the 12 k run, while Vince Charbonneau and Elizabeth Cyarto were
first to finish the 20 km event.
The run
was organized by a regular on the series, Tony Martin and his wife
Gina. Tony and Gina have also directed Beautiful Bechtel
Park 25/50 km, which has been replaced with the
inaugural edition of Conquer The Canuck. There
were shower facilities available before the awards ceremony which had
plenty of food. Almost one-in-four participants won a draw prize
ranging from Runners Choice gift certificates, to free entry in some
OUS races.
Many of
the race directors were on hand and were able to answer questions for
those curious about stepping up to the 25 km and further distances.
Thanks to
everybody who was able to make it, and to George Sarson for playing
the role of time-keeper. Of course, I am particularly grateful
to Tony and Gina who developed the idea to hold such an event, and
took care of all stages of planning and execution.
