Two female course records were set this year at the fifth annual Damn Tuff Run despite humid temperatures hovering near 30°C. Sally John from Collingwood broke the 2 hour mark by a full minute to win the 25km, with Connie Jackson from Allenford in second place in 2:01:54, also breaking the record (2:09:55) set last year by Lee Harvey in cooler weather conditions. Third this year was Gerda Zonruiter from London in 2:11:00.
The men's 25km was won by Richard Pady from Orangeville in 1:36:07, less than a minute off the course record set last year by Scott Vining of Owen Sound. Mark Tarnopolsky from Hamilton was second in 1:38:29 and St. Catharines native Keith Peters nabbed third spot in 1:47:24.
In the over 50 category, the first female was Margaret Shelvey from Woodbridge in 3:32:00, with Stayner's Paul Jewell first male in 1:48:54.
In the 50km ultramarathon race Camilla Lindholm from Lund, Sweden set a new women's record and placed second overall in her first race over 30km in a time of 4:20:19! Jane McLeod set the previous mark of 4:23:40 at last year's event. Placing second was Karin Westfahl in 4:34:28 and third was Pat Sommers in 5:01:35. Both are from Kitchener.
In the men's 50km race it was Victor Hickey from Gagetown, New Brunswick winning for the fourth consecutive year in a time of 3:35:59. He holds the course record of 3:27:01 set at last year's race. Second male was John Culhane from Toronto in 4:31:21, with Jeff Cooper in third, also from Toronto, in 4:33:31.
In the 50 and over categories, Astrid Varga from Kitchener was first first female in 5:31:02 and Toronto runner Paul Hennick was first male in 4:33:31.
The race course consists of a 12½ km route repeated twice by the 25km runners and four times by the 50km runners with the infamous PITA (pain in the ass) and PERPENDICULAR hills to climb on each loop!
A total of 118 runners signed up for the race down from last year's record 128. The 50km race with 44 entrants was the sixth race in the Ontario Ultra Series. Thanks to all sponsors and runners who supported this event organized once again by the Owen Sound Runners. Next year's race will be on July 20, 2002.
