Race Report The 4th annual DTRB 50k run was held on July 22nd in beautiful Owen Sound, Ontario. The course consists of four 12.5k loops around Harrison Park and along part of the Bruce Trail. A field of 49 started the 50k (a 25k is also featured) and 44 finished thanks to weather that was colder than usual. In fact some of us complained about it being too cold after running in last year's sweltering conditions. The overcast cool weather saw both the male and female course records fall. Jane MacLeod from Windsor finished 9th overall in an impressive 4:23:40 and Victor Hickey from Meaford showed his usual dominance by finishing in 3:27:01. Behind Victor by 11 minutes was John Culhane from Toronto in an excellent time of 3:38:01, just 26 seconds off Victor's previous course record. With 2 recent wins in the Ontario Ultra Series and this convincing second, John has shown that he will be a force to reckon with. Sadly Victor has been posted to New Brunswick but he will be back to give us a very high goal to aim for in some of the future Ontario races. Au Revoir Vic and we look forward to following your international performances. Scott Turner finished third in a sub-four hour time to hold onto his lead in the Series championship. Three men under four hours on this tough course was remarkable. More so was the fact that 20 runners finished faster than five hours! Running his first trail ultra, young Nadeem Khan from Toronto did 4:55:55 in racing flats but tells me he is thinking of getting trail shoes! The irrepressible Ron Gehl from Kitchener stormed the course in 4:14:34 to take the Male 50+ Category. He was one of the few participants to run the "big perpendicular hill" at the 6k mark all four times. Edging out Ron for fourth place was Hamilton's Wade Repta in 4:14:22. Karin Westfahl was second woman in 4:35:17 and looked very strong throughout the run. Behind Iris Cooper in 5:00:31 was Pat Sommers from Kitchener who finished fourth in 5:19:42 to continue her lead in the Series. However Diane Cizek, who did not run, remains second in the Series standings and could still be a contender for the Sarson award. Helen Malmberg won the Female 50+ Category in 6:07. There is plenty of accommodation in the area and the race is one of the most scenic you'll run anywhere. Hiking on the nearby Bruce trail is wonderful. Next year's race may feature a 100k which would be eight loops and would make for a most interesting experience. 50 km results 25 km results First Last City Time Cat Posn Bib
